Mirjam, a Dutch biologist, has been working as a development agent for 12 years in the Portuguese Serra da Estrela Mountains. She created and managed a professional centre for sustainable development, where during 10 years she worked at regional, national and international level on topics related to organic agriculture, eco-tourism and environmental education. |

She represented the European Centre for Eco Agro Tourism in Portugal, editing the National Green Holiday Guide, and is one of the founders of the International Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture Training, IFSAT. A year ago she decided to become independent and created her own limited company CAPAX Lda., which main activities consist of consultancy, training and projects related to sustainable initiatives in rural areas. Capax has been active so far in partnerships in EU-projects related to training and education in Sustainable Agriculture. In her beautifull mountain village Vila Soeiro, Mirjam recently created a herb school Carpe Diem, which owns a huge medicinal plants garden and realises a range of courses related to the subject. ‘Short-term’ objectives are the set-up of an accredited 3-years herborist-course in Vila Soeiro and a professional school on organic agriculture – the first in Portugal - elsewhere in the country (Alentejo). In the course of time Mirjam aims at the co-creation of a permcultural community. The integration in the SOHO-initiative gives Mirjam the opportunity to strengthen her network at regional level, which is a mayor benefit to her actual work.
